Understanding Your Car's A/C System
Your vehicle's air conditioning system is made up of several key components working together to keep you cool. Here's a breakdown of how it all works and what can go wrong.
Core Components
- Compressor — The heart of the system, it pressurizes refrigerant and circulates it through the system.
- Condenser — Cools down the high-pressure refrigerant, turning it from a gas back into a liquid.
- Evaporator — Absorbs heat from the cabin air, allowing the system to blow cold air inside the vehicle.
- Expansion Valve / Orifice Tube — Regulates refrigerant flow into the evaporator.
- Receiver/Drier or Accumulator — Filters moisture and debris from the refrigerant.
- Refrigerant Lines & O-Rings — Carry refrigerant between components and seal connections to prevent leaks.
Common A/C Issues
Weak airflow, warm air, strange noises from the compressor, or a system that won't hold a recharge can all point to different underlying issues, from low refrigerant and leaks to a failing compressor.
